Netflix to Make Games Under Oculus and EA Veteran Mike Verdu's Lead

Facebook’s former Reality Labs VP who used to be Senior VP of EA mobile, President and CCO at Kabam, CEO of TapZen, and CCO at Zynga, is coming to Netflix as VP of game development.

Netflix is making big moves in the video game industry. Mike Verdu is not the first person hired to work on the company's games but it is the biggest one so far. Mike Verdu will be Netflix's VP of game development, reporting to chief operating officer Greg Peters.

In 2019, Netflix released a game based on its most popular show, Stranger Things which quickly grew a "Very Positive" rating on Steam. Stranger Things 3: The Game was developed by BonusXP and it fits the aesthetic of the series set in the 1980s perfectly with its pixel visuals.

According to Bloomberg's source, Netflix is planning "to offer video games on the streaming platform within the next year." They are going to be a new genre on the platform and Netflix is not planning to charge additional fees for the gaming service. This, however, is not an official statement from Netflix and the company is yet to announce what the new game division is working on.

With such an impressive list of original series and tons of IPs that could be potentially made into video games, Netflix's step seems not simply reasonable but absolutely organic. With titles like Love, Death & Robots, Another Life, and Outer Banks, there are endless possibilities of developing games in different genres based on fans' favorite TV universes.
