LogInOlden Era is a prequel that might drown you in nostalgia.
The legend is back! Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era is the official prequel of the classic turn-based strategy, and it looks like everything fans loved in older games.
The developer Unfrozen (Iratus: Lord of the Dead) definitely aimed to return the best parts of HoMM 3, 4, and 5, you can see it from the maps, battlefields, town screens, and overall design. Taking advantage of players' nostalgia? I don't mind at all.
Olden Era will take place in Enroth, on the continent of Jadame, where rival factions need to unite against the Hive – "a swarm of insectoids corrupted by an Inferno demon lord."
You will see some familiar factions there: Temple (Classic Humans), Necropolis (Undead and Vampires), Sylvan (The Forces of Nature and Fey Folks), Dungeon (Dark Elves and Underground Creatures), Hive (Demonic Insectoids) – plus one more, which will be revealed later.
You can enjoy the game solo or with others in multiplayer. There are 3 multiplayer modes:
- Classic: play with one or more heroes, upgrade the castle, and explore the map.
- One-hero mode: a blitz-like system, but you have only one hero
- Arena: draft a hero, upgrade them, pick your troops, and challenge the enemy right away.
As for its battles, Olden Era revamps AI and adds a new mechanic: active abilities for creatures and heroes.
The last Heroes of Might & Magic, the 7th part, was released in 2015 and wasn't received too warmly, so this is definitely a welcome comeback.
