New tyFlow 1.1 Introduces a Mesh Boolean & Fracturing System

The capabilities of the renowned particle simulation plug-in for 3ds Max have been enhanced with the addition of PRISM.

Developer and VFX Artist Tyson Ibele has shipped a huge 1.1 update to tyFlow, a renowned particle simulation plug-in for 3ds Max designed to act as a replacement for the software's built-in Particle Flow system.

The key feature of the release is the introduction of PRISM (Polygon Refinement via InterSecting Meshes), a brand-new fully multi-threaded mesh boolean and fracturing system that leverages CUDA GPU acceleration. With PRISM, users can perform both regular boolean operations on meshes and more advanced mesh fracturing and destruction operations. The developer emphasizes that this new system serves as a complete replacement for the plug-in's existing boolean engine within the tyBoolean modifier and now powers tyFlow's new Multifracture workflow.

"The driving force behind PRISM's inception was simple: existing publicly-available mesh boolean and/or constructive solid geometry (CSG) engines (both open and closed source) are either riddled with bugs, are frustratingly slow, can only take very limited inputs, or often produce very degenerate results," comments Tyson on the idea behind the novel engine. "Furthermore, tyFlow's legacy fracture operators (Voronoi Fracture, Edge Fracture, etc.) are only capable of slicing meshes using perfectly flat slice planes. Therefore, the challenge was clear: a solution must be found to solve all of these problems, if tyFlow is going to remain a relevant tool for VFX artists and their workflows."

The release also adds:

  • The option to allow non-manifold edges in Push modifier elements mode.
  • The option in the VDB Copy Out operator to affect either all grids or only grids with the same name, when doing non-add/set operations.
  • Mesh adaptivity setting to tyMesher blobmesh mode.
  • Target filter options to Set Target operator's value and sibling modes.
  • A new "outward from gizmo" mode to tyPush modifier element push settings.
  • Distance/falloff settings tyPush element push settings.
  • X/Y/Z axis spinners to Push operator element amount parameter.
  • Option in the tyParticleSkin modifier to use polygon centers as reference search location, rather than face (triangle) centers.
  • Hull inflation parameter to PhysX Collision operator’s sweep test setting.
  • Multiple bug fixes.
  • And more!
