The Valve leader plans to donate one dollar to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at New Zealand’s Starship Children’s Hospital for every person viewer joining the launch stream.
Gabe Newell revealed he plans to take an actual garden gnome to space. The developer teamed up with Rocket Lab, and the plan is to donate one dollar to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at New Zealand’s Starship Children’s Hospital for every person who joins the launch stream.
Newell has spent most of the pandemic in Auckland, New Zealand, and this move will further "help the economy and community that sheltered him", states the announcement. "Newell would like the good people of New Zealand, global leaders of living in New Zealand, to know that his eccentric attempts at charity are largely harmless and pose no immediate threat to their way of life."
Rocket Lab will use Electron’s Kick Stage to take the 150mm titanium garden gnome made by Weta Workshop to space. The rocket will then reorient itself and leave orbit to burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere, and the Half-Life 2’s Gnome Chompski will be sailing through space on his own.
The team will count every person who joins the Rocket Lab live stream or watches it within 24 hours of launch to define the total donation to the Starship Children’s Hospital.
