Nintendo has acquired a plot of land in Kyoto next to its first headquarters. The cost of the purchase came in at ¥5 billion ($39.8 million). The new location which was previously split between a factory and a disaster prevention center will be used to build a 12-story headquarters (approximately 236.22 feet tall) with a total area of 409,028 square feet.

The building project is expected to be completed by December 2027. With the new site that will be tentatively named Nintendo Headquarters Second Development Building, Nintendo intends to expand the company's research and development work.

This is the latest Nintendo's move to expand its Japanese operations. In February, the company also announced the acquisition of its long-running development partner SRD Ltd for an undisclosed sum. The Tokyo-based company has assisted Nintendo in the development of various games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Switch, and the mobile game Mario Kart Tour.
