As reported by Mat Piscatella, the executive director and video game industry advisor at the NPD Group, in February, Nintendo Switch outsold the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in the US in terms of both units and dollar sales.
The February success has offset Switch's weak sales in January when PS5 was the US’s top-selling gaming hardware with Xbox Series X following it. The competition between the two Japanese brands escalated in October last year when Sony's console bypassed the Nintendo Switch which had held the undisputed leadership for almost three years.
However, with the new Switch OLED, Nintendo managed to boost its sales and establish leadership in November and December last year. In 2022, to date, the Switch has shipped the most units, while the PS5 has brought in the most revenue.
Certainly, Switch's strong sales are, in the first place, provided by the actual availability of consoles in retail as the global chip shortage has made the PS5 and Xbox Series X almost impossible to buy, while the Switch, which has been on market for 5 years already, is much easier to find in stores, even despite the fact that the production was reduced by 20% through March 2022.
