Sony has exceeded its own ambitious sales predictions for the PS5 and shipped a total of 6.3 million consoles during the fourth quarter of 2022 (for the period from January to March 2023). This achievement resulted in Sony's highest fourth-quarter earnings ever, surpassing the figures recorded in the same period of the previous year.
Initially, Sony had projected that it would ship 5.2 million PS5 consoles in Q4. However, the company later revised its forecast to 6.2 million and, as we see now, even exceeded this updated prediction.
With the shipment of 6.3 million consoles in Q4 2022, Sony's total for the fiscal year 2022 has reached 19.1 million, which is significantly higher than its initial forecast of 18 million. This brings the total number of PS5s sold by the company to 38.4 million, since the console's launch in late 2020.
In addition to increased console shipments, Sony has also experienced growth in revenue from its PS5 and PS4 game software, add-on content, and network services, compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. The usage of PS Plus has also increased in the quarter, with a current user base reaching 47.4 million people.
Meanwhile, first-party game sales have declined slightly to 68 million, down by two and a half million. This is partly due to the limited new titles available for sale, with Horizon Call of the Mountain on PSVR2 being the only new title released in the quarter.
