PlayStation is Looking at Opportunities to Utilize Classic IPs, Co-CEO Said

They won't give them up.

Sony

Team Asobi's Astro Bot has won this year's Game of the Year (GOTY) trophy. This platforming game features a variety of characters from PlayStation titles, which has excited fans and sparked a desire to see these beloved characters more frequently. This seems to be part of the gaming giant's plan.

In an interview with the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst shed some light on utilizing "dormant IP." He said:

"The many IPs we own are important assets for PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we are continually looking at opportunities to utilize our past IP as well as developing new franchises."(Translated via Google Translate)

Not surprisingly, the co-CEO's words have sparked a lot of discussion within the community. Some are hoping or dreaming there will be remakes of classic games sooner or later; many are calling for Sony to bring back beloved franchises as soon as possible, especially shooter franchises like Killzone, SOCOM, and Resistance, among many more.

Speaking of old titles, another Japanese gaming giant, SEGA, recently delisted some of its classics, including the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics and Dreamcast Classics, from digital storefronts like Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. Some believe that this action is related to its decision to launch its own game subscription service, which will follow Netfix’s subscription model.

You can read the full interview by Famitsu here, where Hermen also talked about the one title that was especially important over Sony's 30-year history, how film influenced game production, games that he is enthusiastic about, and more.
