PlayStation Sales Fell to $7.1bn Due to Continuing Supply Issues
While PS5 shipped a total of 17.3 million units, Sony's sales in its Game & Network Services segment slipped by 8% year-over-year. The decrease was largely caused by the shortage of components.
Sony revealed its financial report for the third quarter of FY2021. According to the figures, the company's sales in its Game & Network Services segment, which includes PlayStation, fell by 8 percent year-over-year to ¥813.3 billion ($7.1 billion) compared to ¥883.2 billion ($7.7 billion) company's revenue in the same period last year.
The figures marked the decrease in hardware sales, largely caused by the chip shortage and logistic constraints that interfere with the PS5 supply. Sony also reported that Playstation 5 sales amounted to 3.9 million units during the third quarter, meaning that PS5 shipped a total of 17.3 million units, while PlayStation 4 sold 200,000 units.
As for PS4 and PS5 games sales, Sony reported 92.7 million copies sold including 11.3 million first-party titles. The figures display an 11% decrease compared to the same period last year. Download games comprised a larger share of total games sales, amounting to 62% which is 9% higher than it was over the same period last year.
The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers remained nearly the same as in Q3 FY20 with 48 million compared to 47.4 million, while monthly active users on PlayStation Network declined to 111 million from 114 million.
Looking ahead, Sony has lowered its full-year sales forecast for Game & Network Services by 6 percent, currently expecting sales of ¥2.73 trillion ($28.8 billion).
