Publisher of Retro Shooter DUSK Wanted It to Be as Moddable as Skyrim

The HD version is just a tiny part of its SDK's capabilities.

DUSK HD is a curious graphics overhaul for a relatively new shooter. What was meant to be an addition to the SDK allowing modders to work their magic became a fully-fledged experience showing off the original retro FPS in a new cover.

The game's publisher, New Blood Interactive, wanted DUSK to be extremely moddable, just like Doom and other popular games made even more replayable with all the content fans pour into it:

"You see what people do with Skyrim," said New Blood's boss Dave Oshry (via PC Gamer). "If there's not anime big tiddy waifus in Dusk by the time we're done with the SDK, then we haven't done it right.

"We're not going to make those official, contrary to popular belief. 'Dusk Very HD.'"

The idea was to let players "do whatever they want" to the game, and DUSK HD was supposed to show off what the SDK can do, but it "might have gotten carried away."

Of course, a new look and potential ladies with sizeable assets are not all the modding tool can offer. You can also load maps from some classic shooters, like Quake and Half-Life.

"Early on, we made the decision that the game would load .bsp files, which are the same levels Quake, Half-Life, and the Source engine used," said New Blood programmer Ben "Zombie" Moir. "It's kind of insane, because for a lot of different games, you can just copy the maps in and Dusk will load them. It just works."

Naturally, the SDK took a lot of time and skill, but in the end, the developers involved in the work became better specialists. Moreover, the ability to open maps from other games attracts a bigger modding community with its plentiful resources, tips, and tricks.

"DUSK reintroduces you to a world where butchery and bloodshed must be mastered... if you're to survive 'til dawn. Inspired by Doom, Quake, Blood, Heretic, Hexen, Half-Life, Redneck Rampage and all your '90s favorites."

The SDK was released in alpha in 2020, and the HD version arrived in 2023. What would you like to see in the nostalgic depth of the game?
