Real-Time 3D Engine Babylon.js 6.0 Released

It offers new capabilities, tools, performance improvements, and more.

Web-based real-time 3D engine Babylon.js got updated. Version 6.0 brings performance improvements, rendering enhancements, and many new features.

The developers announced that they had been working with the Havok team to introduce advanced physics to Babylon.js. Havok is a software suite that offers a physics engine component to video games. Babylon.js's Physics API has been overhauled and now provides up to 20 times faster performance. 

There are also new Performance Priority Modes that promise up to 50 times faster rendering. You can choose between Backwards Compatibility Mode, Intermediate Mode, or Aggressive Mode.

Other great changes include the ability to render fluids, an updated screen space reflection model, and a new Texture Decals feature, which allows you to "project a decal through a mesh’s UV space to be overlaid on top of the objects material’s texture."

In addition, Babylon.js 6.0 now lets you build more advanced 3D graphics techniques, like Ray Marching, into Node Material shaders. There are also two new nodes in the Node Material: Tri-planar Projection, which allows you to project textures onto 3D objects regardless of the mesh UVs, and a Bi-planar node, which works in a similar way but uses two 2D textures instead of three.
