RTX 4090 in a Handheld? Chinese Modder Crafts A Portable Beast

The stats are impressive, but it's difficult to call the system mobile.

Chinese DIY enthusiast Qingchen DIY has built a powerful portable gaming PC using an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and a mobile NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. The device features a 12.5-inch 4K LCD and supports a power draw of up to 175W.

This custom handheld includes 64GB of DDR5-5600 RAM (which can be further upgraded), a 2TB SSD, and a 50Wh battery. It's based on a modified Tongfang laptop chassis, with components such as the motherboard and cooling system repurposed for the build.

Despite the high performance, cooling remains effective, as evidenced by benchmarking in God of War and Horizon Forbidden West at 4K, with GPU temperatures not exceeding 72°C. It is worth noting that, although the console is handheld, it requires external power to reach its peak performance.

So, if the device draws up to ~175W at peak performance and is powered by a 50Wh battery, it means that at best, you could expect 15-20 minutes of gameplay under maximum load. For optimal performance, the system requires an external power source. Overall, that's a remarkable engineering achievement, but it's more of an experimental device than a go-to solution.
