Sifu To Be Adapted As a Live Action Movie

The film will be written by John Wick writer-creator Derek Kolstad.

Slocap's beat 'em up Sifu, released in February 2022, has become an instant hit. Players have praised it for its unique mechanic where the main character can resurrect every time they get killed, however, with every death, they get older – and eventually die of old age.

Being an indie game, Sifu showed an impressive performance – its sales surpassed 1 million copies within just the first three weeks of its release. It was also nominated for three categories in this year's The Game Awards – Best Independent Game, Best Action Game, and Best Fighting Game.

And now, the game is about to enter another medium – it will be adapted as a live-action movie. To bring the story to big screens, Sifu's developer Slocap has partnered with Story Kitchen, a new media company launched by John Wick writer-creator Derek Kolstad, Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dmitri M. Johnson and former APA partner Mike Goldberg.

As reported by Deadline, Kolstad will be in charge of adapting the script for the movie. If the film follows the plot of the game, it will take place in China and follow the story of a martial arts student, the child of a kung fu master (Sifu), who goes on a quest to avenge the murder of his father. According to the report, the film is being pitched as somewhat between John Wick and M. Night Shyamalan’s Old.

Apparently, the movie is now in very early development so not many details are known yet including its release date. It's only known that it will be produced by Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson alongside Mike Goldberg, Kolstad, Dan Jevons, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Jeff Ludwig.
