SOMA Sells 92,000 copies in 10 Days

Indie developer Frictional Games released direct sales numbers for their critically acclaimed sci-fi horror game SOMA in a post in their official blog written by Thomas Grip, their Creative Director.

In just 10 days (including preorder time) since the title’s release, SOMA has sold 92,000 copies across all platforms (PC and PS4) with about 2,000 copies being sold each day. Their original goal of selling 100,000 in the first month is well within reach, and as a result of these sales, the money they made up to this point will cover their company expenses for the next two years.

Even with a successful launch, they still need to sell about three times that amount to recover from the expenses incurred during development of SOMA, though there is no immediate pressure as the company has completely funded SOMA themselves.

Now if you want to compare it to Frictional Game’s previous title, Amnesia: The Dark Descent sold 20,000 copies in the first week and sold 30,000 in the first month. However, its sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs sold 120,000 copies the first week.

In Frictional Games’ blog, Grip pointed out something that he found to be of interest. With every new title that comes out, the previous title’s sales decline and get absorbed by the new title. For example, when Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs came out, the daily sales for Amnesia: The Dark Descent were cut in half. The odd thing was that the combined sales of both titles, were almost equal to what The Dark Descent sold on its own.

Unexpectedly, the same thing happened with SOMA even though it is a standalone title and completely separate from the Amnesia series. When preorders for SOMA were available, the sales for Amnesia dropped 30% and the drop remains. Grip wonders what caused this and believes sales for Amnesia will rise back up in the future.
