Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that the company is acquiring iSIZE, a UK-based company specializing in video delivery using deep learning technology. Although the price of the acquisition has not been disclosed, Sony states that it will gain significant expertise in applying machine learning to video processing. This move is expected to enhance Sony's research and development efforts, as well as its video and streaming services. While Sony has not provided specific details on how it plans to utilize iSIZE to improve its technical capabilities, it strongly suggests that cloud gaming on PlayStation may receive an upgrade in the near future.

"We are thrilled to announce that Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC ("SIE") has entered into an agreement to acquire iSIZE, a UK-based company specializing in deep learning for video delivery," stated Sony. "We look forward to welcoming the iSIZE team to SIE."

This expansion into cloud gaming aligns with Sony's strategy, especially following Microsoft's recent completion of the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard has allowed them to negotiate deals with various companies, including Nvidia, Nintendo, and Boosteroid, with the aim of making Xbox and Activision Blizzard titles available on more platforms, particularly through cloud streaming. Sony's own cloud gaming strategy remains to be fully seen, and it is likely that this acquisition won't be the last as the company seeks to strengthen its technical expertise.

Interestingly, the announcement of the acquisition coincides with recent staff layoffs at Bungie, a studio owned by Sony. Around 100 employees were affected, making Bungie the fourth Sony-owned studio to go through staff cuts in the same month, joining Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, and others.

Unfortunately, layoffs have been a recurring theme in the gaming industry throughout 2023, despite positive developments such as acquisitions and successful game releases. As Sony continues to navigate this landscape, it will be interesting to see how the company grows its presence in the industry.
