"No credit. No thanks. No honour," says former PlayStation narrative director.
Sony
The Until Dawn movie, which was released on April 25, 2025, has received mixed reviews, with a 50% Tomatometer on the review-aggregation website. Besides being criticized for lacking "soul or originality" by critics, it also doesn't credit the game's original writers.
Kim MacAskill, a former narrative director at Sony, has brought this up in a post on LinkedIn to express her frustration.
"As a former Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Narrative Director who was firmly told that the IP I personally created would NEVER be credited to me as I was salaried (no royalties, no control, no ownership, no acknowledgement) I am struggling with the difference between Neil Druckmann's favour and that of others in your company."
MacAskill noticed that the credits merely read that it is "based on the Sony game," without properly acknowledging the contributions of leading developers and writers who actually created this iconic game.
"They spent years breaking their brains to make something incredible and the world DESERVES to know their names... instead...No credit. No thanks. No honour."
She has therefore initiated a petition on change.org, asking the movie to revise the credits to include the creators as well. She mentioned that when a book is adapted into a movie, its author's name isn't hidden by the publisher, and when TV shows are turned into films, their writers aren't erased by the production company. Therefore, "the rules around game IP are dated and with transmedia being more popular than ever, the rules need updated - starting with the credit owed to Will [Byles], Graham [Reznick] and Larry [Fessenden]."
As of the time of writing this article, the petition has received 289 verified signatures.
