Sony Presented A VR Headset Prototype With 4K OLED Microdisplay

The project was revealed during Sony Technology Day.

Sony presented a prototype of a 4K OLED microdisplay that could be used in future VR headsets. The project, being developed at Sony’s R&D Center (not the PlayStation division) was revealed as a part of 'Sony Technology Day'.

Engineers Yasuka Ishihara and Kei Kimura showed a VR headset prototype with two 4K microdisplays and new low latency technology. The microdisplays are said to achieve 4K resolution at only a fraction of the size of most current VR displays.

Please note that the technology is currently in the prototype stages of design so it probably won't be appearing in the new PS5 VR headset which should be released in 2022.

Sony is reportedly working on new next-generation VR headsets beyond the launch of PSVR 2 which means they can release devices for other platforms.
