Sony's latest update on PS5 sales reveals that the Japanese company has sold over 500 million home consoles.
Sony's most recent financial report disclosed that it shipped a remarkable 6.3 million PS5 units in the last quarter, setting a new record. This brings the total number of PS5 shipments to 38.4 million. While Sony has only occasionally shared sales data for its consoles, by combining the latest reliable data for all five of the company's home consoles, the total now exceeds 500 million.
The sale of 500 million PlayStation consoles may ring a bell for some, as Sony had previously released a limited-edition PS4 to commemorate this achievement in 2018. While there appears to be a discrepancy in the numbers, Sony's calculation of the milestone at the time apparently also included sales of portable consoles such as the PSP and Vita, which would add nearly 100 million combined sales to the overall count.
Several fans have pointed out that Sony is now the first console manufacturer to sell over 500 million home consoles. While this statement is technically accurate, there are some important details to consider. To put things in perspective, Sony only has two main competitors for this milestone. One of them, Microsoft, released the first Xbox after a generation of massively successful PS1 sales, giving it less time in the market compared to Sony.
Sony's other competitor, Nintendo, introduced its first hardware ten years ahead of Sony's PS1 release. However, when considering only home consoles and the Switch, Nintendo's total sales figures amount to just over 400 million units sold, which falls short of Sony's figures.
Still, if we take into account the company's handheld consoles, Nintendo's total sales exceed 800 million units to date. By including handheld sales figures, it's evident that the DS and Wii generation could have taken Nintendo past the 500 million milestone much earlier.
As evidenced by these facts, direct comparisons are difficult, however, one thing is clear: the success of the PS5 is reinforcing Sony's position as a major platform holder in the game industry's history.
