Sony Reportedly Plans to Add Advertisements to PlayStation F2P Games

Like Microsoft, which reportedly intends to integrate ads into Xbox free-to-play games, Sony seems to have similar plans. The new report reads that the company is considering the opportunity to introduce ads into its free-to-play titles that will seamlessly fit into game experiences.

A few days ago it was reported that Microsoft intends to integrate advertisements into Xbox free-to-play games. And now, it seems that they are not the only ones. Now, apparently, Sony is considering the same plans with its PlayStation games.

According to Insider, which cites three sources familiar with the company's roadmap, Sony is currently exploring the opportunities to incentivize developers to continue making free-to-play games by providing them with new ways to monetize them. It is also said that the company is already testing the technology with third-party partners.

Unlike Microsoft, which reportedly doesn't plan to charge a commission on the proceeds from ads, Sony hasn't decided yet if it will take a cut of ad revenue. Besides, the report reads that the company may require developers to pay for access to a player activity on PlayStation consoles.

Right now, advertising on PlayStation is limited to the PS Store menu, where developers can promote their games, while the new initiative may involve in-game ads, similar to digital billboards in sports titles, to make ads seem more natural to feel like they are a part of the game. At the same time, the new program may involve ads that give viewers rewards for watching them as well as promotions for in-game items like avatar skins.

The initiative, which Sony reportedly started considering 18 months ago, is said to be launched before the end of 2022.
