Six little markers do what usually requires a studio or a special suit.
Motion capture is usually not an easy task, at least if you want high-quality results. It requires either a whole studio, a suit, or special software to run your digital avatar on the screen.
Sony joined the market by releasing Mocopi – a wireless mobile mocap device that teleports you into digital space. It consists of six sensors that you need to attach to your wrists, ankles, head, and hip. The system is meant to work on a phone, which makes it very easy to operate.
The device estimates the position and posture of your joints using data from the sensors. AI helps train the system on various human movements and capture the movements even where sensors are not attached. Mocopi should work for up to 10 hours – enough for any VTuber stream.
The device is now available not only in Japan but also in the US. It costs $449, which might sound like a lot, but it's actually not that expensive compared to the thousands of dollars you'd need for a suit or a studio that will give you a better result.
You can use Mocopi to make a cool avatar or have fun in VR Chat. I don't think serious movie production will use it, but the little markers are definitely flexible.
