Spectre Divide Dev Mountaintop Studios Will Be Closed This Week

Mountaintop Studios, the developer behind the 3v3 tactical shooter Spectre Divide, has announced a painful update: It will close its doors by the end of this week. Spectre Divide, which launched a few months ago in September last year, will be taken offline within the next 30 days. 

The free-to-play game, one featuring a fresh art style and creative gameplay mechanics that allowed players to control two characters simultaneously, used to see around 400,000 players, with its peak concurrent players at 10,000. However, it has struggled to engage players, receiving mixed reviews on Steam with 63% positive feedback.

Soon after the game was released, the team made a difficult decision to let go of 13 employees in order to support the game and its community. The first season that started two weeks ago didn't meet the "level of success we need to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat," which seems to be the final hit resulting in the shutdown. 

Mountaintop Studios has many industry veterans who used to work at Respawn, Epic, Riot, Bungie, and more. CEO Nate Mitchell said that they've tried out all possible ways to "keep going," including looking for a new publisher, additional investment, and even acquisition deals. Unfortunately, none of these efforts worked. "The industry is in a tough spot right now."

Despite not having the funding to continue supporting the game, the studio promised that it would refund all in-game purchases made since the launch of Season 1 on February 25.
