On April 30, Square Enix revealed a significant loss of $141 million, prior to publishing its fiscal year's report, which ended on March 31, 2024. The loss was attributed to "content abandonment," resulting from a revision in the company's production processes.

According to reporter Alex Donaldson, Square Enix has halted or delayed several projects, including potential game releases within the next year. The company stated that it conducted a thorough review of all ongoing projects and made necessary decisions.

Earlier, Square Enix management talked about shifting its focus to developing large AAA games primarily from its own studios. However, the status of major Square Enix franchises remains uncertain. The company has not disclosed sales figures for the recent Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and analysts have suggested that its performance may have been subpar.
