Study: Automatic vs. Manual Retopo Tools

Here's a great little study by Mantas Talmantas on how different automatic tools perform.

Mantas Talmantas shared a small test of different decimation tools that were given a task to generate a very low poly model for real-time graphics. The original mesh was created in RealityCapture at about 5 mil polygons. The final image shows how automatic decimation tools perform compared to manual retopology tools.

"In this case, I was looking to maintain as much as possible of original details while having as little as possible polys. Very small details should be transferred by normal maps later," wrote the artist. Mantas noted that he first made manual retopo in 3d Coat and got 2222 verts 4888 edges 4440 tris 2667 polys which was the golden standard.
