Swen Vincke, Todd Howard & Sam Lake Join Variety's List of Most Influential Entertainment Figures

Variety has updated its Variety500 index, adding six new game development leaders.

News and entertainment magazine Variety has released the seventh edition of Variety500, an annual index of the 500 most influential figures in the entertainment industry, adding six new game developers to the list.

Reflecting the accomplishments of the global media industry leaders over the passing year, the updated list now includes such notable game creators as Swen Vincke, head of Larian Studios and a key contributor to the acclaimed RPG Baldur's Gate 3, which won six nominations, including Game of the Year, at The Game Awards this year, and Sam Lake, the Creative Director behind Alan Wake II who played a pivotal role in the game's success at TGA 2023, securing wins in categories such as Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Narrative.

The ranks of influential figures in this year's Variety500 have also been joined by legendary Game Director at Bethesda Todd Howard, Video Game Designer at Nintendo and the creator of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the head of Bandai Namco Nao Udagawa, and Alexandre de Rochefort, the CEO of Gameloft.

"The final selection of individuals is the culmination of months of careful deliberation," commented Variety on its decision-making process. "Throughout the year, a series of meetings are held to refine the list. Each candidate's merits are evaluated based on thorough research and consultation with the wider industry."
