The TV show scored the largest viewership growth from premiere to Episode 2 in the history of HBO.
The Last of Us TV series has become an instant hit right out of the gate – when the first episode of the show first aired on HBO, it set a new record for the TV channel becoming its second highest-watched series premiere in over a decade. And now, it continues to reach a wider audience and set new records.
As Nielsen measurements and Warner Bros. Discovery's first-party data indicate (via Variety), Episode 2 of the post-apocalyptic drama drew in 5.7 million viewers through linear airings on HBO and streams on HBO Max, marking a 22% increase from the previous week's record-breaking 4.7 million viewers. Warner Bros. Discovery later reported that the number had risen to 10 million within two days of availability.
According to HBO, the second episode of the show saw the "largest week 2 audience growth for an HBO Original drama series in the history of the network." In addition, as Variety reports, after one week of availability, Episode 1 is still increasing its viewership and has already reached 18 million viewers, which is a significant increase from its premiere night audience of nearly 4 times.
The series created by Chernobyl's Craig Mazin and the game's creator Neil Druckmann will run for a total of nine episodes. Both the fans of the video game series and people who never played the games have so far united in their appreciation for the TV series. It remains to be seen whether the Last of Us show will meet the expectations set by its strong premiere and continue to impress audiences throughout its nine-episode run.
