The Last of Us Part 2 Developer Doesn't Understand Why Players Complain about Remaster

"It’s the best way to play The Last of Us Part 2."

In late 2023, Naughty Dog officially canceled its once "most ambitious project" – the Last of Us multiplayer game to focus on what the team does best. If it means releasing remasters and sequels of its hit series, well, who can blame them?

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will be released on January 19, and its game director Matthew Gallant is excited and a little confused as to why not everyone appreciates it. Just a reminder, the original TLOU 2 was launched in 2020, so the game isn't fresh but it's not old either, so plenty of fans still don't understand why it needed a remaster.

In turn, Gallant doesn't understand why people dislike the idea. Speaking with VGC, he said a remaster is a better version of the game:

"I don’t understand some of the consternation about what The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered offers. It’s the best way to play The Last of Us Part 2, if you’re a new PlayStation owner and new to the franchise we want to get you the best experience with all the hardware features on a PS5 native version of the game. My sense is there’s an audience for this for whom the idea of a PS5 version is thrilling. I’m also speaking for myself, I’m excited we can bring this to the fans, and if it’s not for everyone, that’s fine."

He compared the leap between TLOU 2 and TLOU 2 Remastered to that of The Last of Us 2013 to The Last of Us Remastered for PS4, released in 2014. Naughty Dog "got every ounce of power out of the PS4," it "hit all the limits" so that the team could "basically enhance everything."

So TLOU 2 Remastered should be the best version of the game and attract both old and new players, acquired by the success of the HBO show, which, by the way, will see Season 2 in 2025. It offers new content, cosmetics, and a roguelike survival mode, so you won't be bored even if you never wanted this new version.

I love when people say nobody liked the story.  It was one of the best games I’ve ever played in my life.  I didn’t want either girl to fight each other and felt mega numbed by the end of the game. I’ve never had a game give me an emotion like that.  It was the moment I accepted that video games are truly an art.

Maybe because nobody was a big fan of the story of the game so who cares if it gets an upgrade
