Surpassed only by Frozen and Frozen 2.
A month and a half since its official release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to shatter records and achieve remarkable milestones, solidifying its position as the third highest-grossing animated film of all time.
With a staggering total of approximately $1.254 billion in earnings, comprising $550 million from the domestic market and $700 million internationally, this animated adventure produced by Illumination and Nintendo has now surpassed the earnings of Incredibles 2, which garnered $1.243 billion, claiming the coveted title of the third highest-grossing animated film in global box office history.
Now, its only contenders are the Disney juggernauts Frozen, which accumulated $1.290 billion, and its sequel Frozen 2, which achieved an astounding $1.453 billion in earnings. Given that the Mario movie is still playing in theaters worldwide, it is highly probable that it will surpass the earnings of Frozen and secure the second spot, cementing its place as one of the most successful animated feature films ever created.
Considering the movie's overwhelming success, which even surpassed the expectation of its creators, it's hardly a surprise that Nintendo plans to produce more animated films based on their game franchises. Besides being the third highest-grossing animated movie, Super Mario also holds the title of the most financially successful video game-based film adaptation of all times, which it got by beating Blizzard's Warcraft.
