Ukie published a set of 11 principles, aiming to provide guidance on paid loot boxes.
The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (Ukie) has issued a fresh set of guidelines titled "New Principles and Guidance on Paid Loot Boxes." These 11 principles were collaboratively curated by representatives from different sectors within the UK games industry, aiming to offer clear directions regarding the use of paid loot boxes.
The main objectives of these principles are to address concerns surrounding younger players. The guidelines propose limiting the ability of individuals under 18 to purchase loot boxes unless they obtain explicit consent from a parent, carer, or guardian. Furthermore, the guidelines stress the need for full disclosure of paid loot boxes before purchase and download. This ensures that players are fully informed about the contents of the loot boxes they are acquiring.
The principles have been formulated by the Technical Working Group, consisting of representatives from various sectors within the video games industry. This formulation was the result of extensive collaboration with DCMS, other governmental bodies, academics, third-party advocacy groups, and consumer organizations. According to Ukie, the aim is to emphasize that fostering player protection and transparency is a collective responsibility that extends throughout the entire video games sector.
"Publishing these shared Principles for how the industry approaches loot boxes is a UK first and provides us with a clear direction moving forwards," commented Ukie Co-CEO Daniel Wood. "The Principles will improve protections for all players and underlines the industry’s commitment to safe and responsible play. We look forward to working collaboratively across industry and with others to implement them over the coming months."
"We've been clear the video games industry needs to do more to protect children and adults from the harms associated with loot boxes," added John Whittingdale, Minister for the Creative Industries. "These new principles are a big step forward to make sure players can enjoy video games responsibly and safely. I look forward to seeing games companies put the plans into action and will be watching their progress closely."
