Riley Neville's Unreal Engine-powered game Isopod gets an awesome new feature.
Riley Neville, the Lead Developer at Sbug Games, continues working on the upcoming 3D adventure platformer Isopod, offering a look at an awesome new feature added recently to the game.
Described as a "very normal web-based fast travel system," the new feature is anything but normal, being perhaps one of the most creative implementations of fast travel in the history of video games. Instead of your usual, run-of-the-mill maps with markers, the system offered by Isopod is represented by a network of interconnected funnel webs, seamlessly blending into the game's Australian outdoors setting where funnel webs are more than common.
When players enter one of these funnels, they are transported into a magical, cosmic dimension with multiple exits, each leading to a different point on the map, thus allowing you to travel between them in an incredibly immersive and diegetic manner.
Surprisingly, the "magic" aspect of the system also doesn't feel out of place, thanks to the introduction of a new character: Ted the Wizard, an eight-legged sorcerer resembling a Sydney funnel-web spider, who is seemingly responsible for creating the mystical webs.
For those unaware, Isopod is a work-in-progress spin-off of Webbed, a wholesome 2D platformer with neat web-based mechanics. As with many great indie games, the project began back as a simple experiment with procedural animation in Unreal Engine, but quickly evolved into a fully-fledged game, with Riley steadily expanding the experience with new features, levels, characters, animations, gameplay mechanics, and more. Here are a few of the previous Isopod demos shared by the developer:
