This New App Lets You View & Interact With glTF Files on an iPhone
The Khronos Group shipped a new free app for interacting with glTF 3D models on iOS devices.
The Khronos Group has officially launched Khronos glTF Viewer, a new free and open-source app that allows the user to view and interact with 3D models in the Khronos glTF 2.0 file format on iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers with Apple silicon.
Developed in collaboration with AR studio Fourspace, the app can display 3D models against a digital or augmented reality background, enabling one to zoom, spin, and orient the model and inspect it from different angles.
According to Khronos, the app supports all features specified in the core glTF 2.0 specification, as well as various glTF extensions, including Physically Based Rendering (PBR) effects, with the team planning to add support for additional glTF capabilities in future updates.
Features
- Built-In Sample Models – View sample glTF models showcasing features like physically-based rendering and animation.
- Object Mode – Rotate, zoom, or pan a 3D model to view it from various angles.
- AR Mode – Place a 3D model on real-world surfaces with augmented reality.
- File Browser – Browse and display your own glTF files, including optional integration with iCloud Drive.
"Full application source code has been released on GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license to inspire innovative, industry and community-driven 'glTF on iOS' experiences," commented the team. "Developers are invited to use the source code to develop their own derivative projects and drive the proliferation of glTF 3D and AR viewers, bringing the superb performance and rich detail of glTF models to the iOS ecosystem."
