Softimage 3D/XSI was widely adopted in film and game production, celebrated for its speed and intuitive interface, but was discontinued by Autodesk in 2015 as the company shifted its focus to 3ds Max and Maya, a move that still leaves a bitter taste for many, especially those who remember how frustrating other 3D tools were back in the 2000s.
We recently shared a leaked screenshot of the Gordon Freeman model used in the Half-Life 2 box art, which sparked nostalgia among artists who learned and used Softimage XSI. Some recalled its pivotal role as the main 3D software for studios like Valve, SEGA, Konami, Capcom, and Namco, as well as its use in Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Titanic, The Fifth Element, and The Matrix. Much of the pipelines, scripting, and workflows built around it were lost after Softimage was discontinued.
