Tim Cain Showcased The Outer Worlds' Vertical Slice

It was created one year after the start of the game's development.

Fallout Co-creator Tim Cain showcased footage of the vertical slice made for The Outer Worlds, which was released back in 2020.

The developer explained that vertical slice is one of the game development stages, which represents a level or a map of a game. Unlike the prototype, the vertical slice features the final artwork and can be played, though it doesn't contain every piece of art that will appear in the final version of the game.

The Outer Worlds' vertical slice is an outdoor map with a few connecting maps, specifically the town map and three dungeon maps. According to Cain, this vertical slice became a base for the shipped game, which was released two years later. Cain refers to the work as "super-impressive", as it was created only one year into the game. The team had one year to learn Unreal Engine, and, according to Cain, it was a testament to how good the team was. Compared to the final version, the UI was incomplete, and the characters' hair was not ready at this stage.

Recently, Tim Cain shared a list of the top five modern RPGs the creators can learn from, explained why he left the Fallout franschise, and revealed some facts about beloved video games, for example, who started the nuclear war in Fallout 4 or which ideas could have been included in the proposed sequel to Fallout and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
