Tokyo Game Show To Return As a Physical Event This Year

TGS 2022 will be back as an in-person event taking place from September 15 to 18.

On Monday, Tokyo Game Show (TGS) organizers CESA, Nikkei, and Dentsu announced that TGS 2022 will be back as a physical event, for the first time in three years. It will be held for four days from September 15 to 18 in Chiba, Japan with the first two days being reserved for business visitors. The public will be able to attend the event from September 17.

Initially being a physical event, in 2020, the Tokyo Games Show shifted to a fully virtual one due to the pandemic, a year later becoming a hybrid event offering both online and in-person activities. This year, for the first time since the pandemic began, TGS will return in full capacity as a primarily in-person event.

The number of tickets will be limited though and sold under the terms of local government policies on COVID-19. It is said that pre-school children along with elementary school students will not be able to attend this year's event "due to uncertainties of vaccination situations among young people".

The theme of this year's TGS will be "Nothing Stops Gaming". In an announcement of the event (via Gematsu), organizers shared: "Over these two years, various fun events disappeared from our daily life, but games still lightened up our days. Games will continue to brighten up the days of everybody now and forever—this year’s theme implies such strong determination."

TGS is one of the latest events in the games industry that confirmed a return to physical. Last week, the Annual D.I.C.E. Awards took place as an in-person event at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. It was announced that GDC will be held in San Francisco next month. Germany’s Gamecom also shared its hopes to be back as a physical event.

Although, E3 2022 will be the exception with the Entertainment Software Association confirming that it's canceled this year's in-person show.
