Unity CEO Believes the Metaverse Will Have Millions of Destinations

John Riccitiello shared his vision of the metaverse emphasizing the importance of real-time and saying that over the years there will be millions of destinations in the metaverse.

During the recent Augmented World Expo, Unity Technologies CEO John Riccitiello presented his own vision of the metaverse.

According to the head of the company, the metaverse is "the next generation of the internet that is always real-time and mostly interactive, mostly social and mostly persistent." He emphasized that he uses the word "mostly" because, despite the gradual transitioning from 2D to 3D, some of the content will still be in 2D, as well as not every type of content should be persistent or shared.

Riccitiello also believes that like we have millions of websites nowadays, the same way the metaverse will have millions of destinations over time. He sees three main destinations it will take: firstly, fully digital worlds will constitute a significant part of the metaverse, they'll be the "places you could live and inhabit." Secondly, the metaverse will feature destinations that alter the real world. And lastly, the experiences like VR and AR that we already have these days will be also presented in the metaverse.

The head of Unity also pointed out the importance of real-time saying that it should be the crucial part of what the metaverse will look like.

Apart from this, Riccitiello touched upon the devices that will support the metaverse noting that it will be multiplatform so that people could be able to jump from smartphone to console, from console to PC, etc. as we now go from one website to another.

Speaking of the digital avatar idea, Riccitiello said that he believes people do not need a single avatar identity as, for example, it would be weird to have the same avatar in different game worlds.

He also shared that he believes that in the future people will have smartphones with the contextual app launchers, the smart system that opens a certain app once we need it. For example, it might automatically open an app that shows you a menu, when you pass by a restaurant or opens a navigation app when you head somewhere.
