Using Polycam to Create a Digital Copy of a Real-Life Environment

It took the creator just a few minutes to turn an apartment interior into a digital 3D scene.

Amir Berenjian, the CEO of REM5 Studios, an XR and Web3 experience agency, has demonstrated a neat way of turning a real-life environment into a fully-digital copy of itself. Using the latest version of Polycam, a 3D capture application for iPhone and iPad, and an iOS 16-powered iPhone's LiDAR scanner, the creator managed to quickly scan several rooms and automatically turn the captured scans into an accurate 3D scene.

Then, Amir exported the environment into the SIMULACRA metaverse platform, allowing the creator to run around the untextured digital version of the existing apartment interior. According to the author, the entire experiment took just minutes from start to finish, demonstrating that the developers are "another step closer to the commoditization of the digitization of assets."
