Valve Wants Steam Controller 2 & New Version of Steam Deck

The second-gen handheld could have a better screen and longer battery life.

Steam Deck designers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais shared Valve's plans, saying the next Steam Deck could have better battery life and screen, while Steam Controller 2 is a matter of how and when.

Speaking with The Verge, both agreed that they'd like to improve the screen and battery life in the new model of the handheld. A more "buff" device, however, is not something the company aims to produce for now:

“Right now the fact that all the Steam Decks can play the same games and that we have one target for users to understand what kind of performance level to expect when you’re playing and for developers to understand what to target... there’s a lot of value in having that one spec,” said Griffais.

When asked about another Steam Controller, Yang answered that it might be in the cards in the future but not at the moment as Valve is busy with the Deck.

“I think it’s likely that we’ll explore that because it’s something we wanted as well. Right now, we’re focusing on the Deck, so it’s a little bit of the same thing as the microconsole question: it’s definitely something where we’d be excited to work with a third-party or explore ourselves,” he said.

Going back to Steam Deck, the company is currently developing the technology that can "control the audio volume and duck the volume of certain applications without affecting the whole system." Valve is also interested in bringing mobile games to the device, so we may see some new gems there one day.
