Rapid departures are ruining game development.
When Activision Blizzard ordered its employees to return to the office, there were a lot of people not pleased with the news. Many refused to rearrange their lives and decided to quit. It seems like the company is still losing talent, and to such a degree that it might hinder development.
World of Warcraft game producer Adam "Glaxigrav" went on Twitter to complain about the situation, saying that "someone in power doesn't listen to the game directors who make his products" and so the producers are creating crisis maps of what they can or can't ship. "I literally have a schedule I strike out as people hand in notice."
A Blizzard spokesperson told IGN that creating crisis maps is "not a team practice for WoW. However, making decisions around priorities, iterating, and ensuring quality are everyday parts of game development."
Game designer Allison Steele supported Adam sharing that the forced return-to-office policy cost the studio some great workers and will continue to cost more in the coming months.
"It is a terrible, shortsighted, self-destructive policy that is only weakening our ability to deliver the kind of game we want to make and our players deserve," she said.
It seems like Activision Blizzard will have to face the problem sooner rather than later. Maybe its staff will have a chance to choose where to work, who knows?
