Xbox confirmed that it fixed the DRM issue in the 2206 update.
Since the launch of the Xbox Series X, the console had a controversial feature – if players wanted to launch an Xbox One game from a retail disc, they had to first go through the online check-in as the console, for some reason, required internet connection even in this case.
This month, however, players noticed that this DRM issue is now fixed and they can now play games from Xbox One discs without connecting to the internet. Microsoft also confirmed that indeed, the new update for the Xbox Series X|S removed this controversial feature.
"This is true since the 2206 update," Xbox engineering lead Eden Marie wrote in a tweet. "We examined data since Series X|S launch & determined the online compatibility check isn't needed in the vast majority of cases for Xbox One discs."
Marie noted that this improvement applies to the majority of disc-based games, however, some games are still required to be updated online after installation to "ensure the best experience."
The 2206 update included three releases which came out on June 1, June 28, and July 28. The patch notes, however, only provided users with some vague descriptions of the improvements and did not specify when the DRM issue was fixed.
