If players don't come back by Season 3, more layoffs could follow.

Ubisoft's free-to-play FPS XDefiant was released in May and immediately faced server and matchmaking issues. Several months later, there is a bigger problem: servers don't matter if there are no people playing.
According to Insider Gaming, while the game saw 8 million players in its first week, now it's at risk of losing post-launch support due to rapidly decreasing engagement and lack of player spending. One source told the outlet XDefiant is struggling to get 20,000 concurrent players across all its platforms, while another hinted that the number might be even lower.
Ubisoft has already cut 45 jobs at its San Francisco and North Carolina branches, and more layoffs might come if the situation doesn't improve. "Expect more Ubisoft San Fran layoff headlines within six months," one source told Insider Gaming.
Employees are said to be unhappy with the leadership, who don't want to take responsibility for the project’s issues and improve the company's reportedly toxic culture.
The management hopes for Season 3 to turn things around, but with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 coming in October, chances are slim, and XDefiant's future looks grim.
