In recent years big-league animation studios have been experimenting with a brand-new animation technique that made the action scenes in their movies look simply unforgettable – deliberate framerate reduction.
Some of the most notable animated films from the early 2020s, such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, among others, serve as perfect examples of the approach, showing how high-octane sequences benefit from lowered FPS. Recently, 3D Artist and Game Developer Lez Tusi proved that the technique in question can be used for video games as well, presenting a new demo for Cognitio Terra.
For those unaware, Cognitio Terra is an upcoming 2.5D side-scrolling action game being developed by a team of two in Unity. The latest demo shared by the devs showcases the game's refined ledge-climbing system, reminiscent of titles like Ninja Gaiden and Prince of Persia. Furthermore, the presentation highlights the title's slick movement animations, once again demonstrating the effectiveness of blending 20 FPS and 60 FPS to heighten the impact of each action.
