22 GPU Counterfeiters Arrested in China
The value of the graphics cards involved in the case is estimated at over $2 million.
Twenty-two individuals have been apprehended by the Binzhou City Police in China for their involvement in a sophisticated GPU counterfeiting ring. This illegal operation revolved around acquiring second-hand graphics cards that were previously used for cryptocurrency mining. The culprits would then meticulously clean and repackage these GPUs, passing them off as brand-new products on various online stores.
According to Videocardz, this illicit enterprise required a considerable number of participants who were responsible for purchasing the used GPUs, thoroughly testing and refurbishing them, and subsequently rebranding the items with deceptive labels. The full scope of this criminal network remains uncertain, as the location that was busted could be just one of many facilities used by the syndicate.
Out of the 22 arrested individuals, only seven have been detained and are currently facing charges in connection to this fraudulent scheme. The estimated value of the counterfeit GPUs involved in the case is over $2 million.
Given the potential reach of these counterfeit products, it is essential to exercise caution while making purchases, especially from lesser-known sources. So remember, buying an RTX 3090 for $100 on Wish is probably not the best idea.
