71% of PS5 Disc Version Owners in the UK Use It as Their Primary Console
In comparison, only 48% of Xbox Series X owners named it as their main console.
Analyst firm Ampere Analysis has released a report sharing the results of the market research on user console choice conducted in Q4 2022.
The research has shown that a higher percentage of PlayStation 5 disc version owners (71%) consider it as their primary console compared to owners of other platforms. For comparison, 48% of Xbox Series X owners in the UK named it as their main console and Series S owners who use the console as their primary one account for only 35%.
Among Nintendo Switch owners, 49% identified it as their primary console, which is slightly higher than the percentage of Xbox Series X owners who identified it as their main console.
The report also noted that PS5 owners were more likely to own only that console. This, together with the fact the vast majority of PS5 owners consider it their main console, could possibly prove that some Xbox Series S owners are using it as a secondary platform with Game Pass in addition to PS5.
The report also states that 43% of owners of the digital version of PS5 considered it as their primary console, indicating that hardcore PlayStation fans may prefer the disc version.
"It's early days, but this suggests Sony's exclusives strategy and brand strength has not been substantially disrupted by Microsoft's Game Pass strategy yet (in the UK)," Ampere Analysis's Piers Harding-Rolls wrote.
The analyst, however, noted that there are currently no data here on how much time people spend on individual consoles, so the ratio is subject to change, especially in 2023, which, according to Harding-Rolls, will be big for Game Pass and Microsoft exclusives.
