A Closer Look at Character Rigs in Riot's Fighting Game Project L

Riot Games' Jeremy Ernst shared a behind-the-scenes reel for the studio's upcoming 2D fighting game.

Jeremy Ernst, a Technical Art Director at Riot Games, has recently shared an incredible behind-the-scenes demo reel providing a closer look at character rigs made for Project L, the studio's upcoming 2D free-to-play fighting game based on Riot's flagship title League of Legends.

In case you missed it, during the recently-concluded Evolution Championship Series (Evo) 2023, a world-renowned fighting games tournament, Riot gave us an in-depth view of Project L, showcasing its gameplay and revealing four playable characters – Ahri, Darius, Ekko, and Yasuo – along with their unique abilities. This presentation also highlighted the game's visual style and character animations, among other features.

According to the artist, the reel in question was shared to celebrate some of the work Riot's tech art team did for Project L's EVO 2023 demo, allowing us to take a sneak peek at the studio's production process.

In the demo, Ernst showcased the joint-based face rigs made for the aforementioned characters, demonstrated a material-driven lighting setup powered by Unreal Engine, offered a more detailed exploration of character rigs, deformations, and dynamic setups, and more. Additionally, the creator revealed that the team utilized Maya to set up the character rigs. You can check out the full demo embedded above or by visiting the author's LinkedIn page.
