A Deepfake Version of South Korean Presidential Candidate

Meet AI Yoon, an entertaining deepfake version of South Korean presidential candidate Yoon Suk-yeol.

With US Presidents Franklin Roosevelt relying heavily on the latest advancements of radio and Dwight Eisenhower utilizing TV to win the 1952 election, it is not really uncommon for politicians to use the technology of their respective eras to achieve their political goals. But this case from South Korea is definitely something on another level.

A team of developers has created a deepfake version of a presidential candidate from the People Power Party Yoon Suk-yeol and allowed the AI Yoon to answer the questions of anyone willing to ask. The digital avatar looks near-identical to the real South Korean candidate but its vocabulary consists of jokes, memes, humor, and pure satire. AI Yoon has attracted millions of views since making his debut on January 1.

To simulate the voice of AI Yoon, the developers recorded more than 3,000 sentences and 20 hours of audio and video of a real version of Yoon Suk-yeol. The humorous and satirical answers are being brainstormed beforehand.

This unorthodox campaign strategy has certainly paid off, over 7 million users have already visited the AI Yoon online and asked him questions.

"If we had only produced politically correct statements, we would not have this reaction," said Baik Kyeong-hoon, Director of the AI Yoon team. "The political establishment has been too slow in the face of a fast-changing society."

If you speak Korean, you can visit AI Yoon and ask him a question yourself. Also, don't forget to join our new Reddit pageour new Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we are sharing breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
