Curious Archive dissects the adventure's locations and creatures.
YouTube channel Curious Archive released a video essay discussing Rain World and what they call "the most complex virtual ecosystem" they've ever seen in a video game.
If you've never heard of the game, don't worry, we've got you covered. Rain World is a 2D pixel art survival platformer released in 2017. You play as a nomadic slugcat, "both predator and prey in a broken ecosystem" – a strange creature that got separated from its family in a flood. Climb intricate environments and hunt small animals, trying to find your loved ones and not become prey yourself.
The developer Videocult together with publisher Akupara Games announced a major DLC last year, which seemingly boosted it with a new audience. Rain World: Downpour will be out on January 19.
In the video, Curious Archive talks about Rain World’s unique system of procedurally generated animation and complex AI used to simulate the feeling of a living ecosystem. They take a look at the game's varied locations and creatures that inhabit them, as well as how they interact with the protagonist and each other.
