Maksym Zhuravlov provided a behind-the-scenes look at the realistic player-door interaction animations in Naughty Dog's TLoU Part II.
As many video game developers know from their personal experiences, creating realistic and believable doors for current-era AAA games is one of, if not the most challenging tasks one might face during development. Modern-day games require doors to interact with the environment and characters in a realistic way and should have lifelike physics, sometimes necessitating contributions from multiple departments within the studio. One great example is the doors present in Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II, and luckily for us, we recently got a chance to learn more about how they were made.
A few days ago, Lead Animator at Naughty Dog Maksym Zhuravlov shared a short demo providing a behind-the-scenes look at TLoU Part II's doors and how they interact with the player character during combat situations. In the video itself and the comments below it, the author demonstrated some of the game's realistic player-door interaction animations, shed some light on how they were set up, and provided tons of details regarding the development process, also recommending to check out Kurt Margenau's 2021 Twitter thread dedicated to the game's door system.
