Radical Entertainment's 2009 action-adventure game franchise Prototype has been silent over the decade since its sequel was released in April 2012 and both titles ported to Xbox One and PS4 in 2015. A recent rumor suggests that a new Prototype game might be in the works.
According to what was shared in a now-deleted post by a Reddit user named Bigbyy (via Insider Gaming), who was part of a study group, the new game could see the return of Alex Mercer, who has the ability to shapeshift, as the protagonist.
“[It] was YouGov survey which asked me to sign an NDA and confirm that I would not disclose the contents. It then confirmed a series of features that upcoming games will include and how popular this was with me [percentage wise]. It was not a playtest but did specify that these features were already planned as part of upcoming games,” Bigbyy told Insider Gaming.
The reason why Prototype, which received a favorable review score of around 78 on Metacritic, didn't receive more games to expand its universe was explained in a statement issued to Kotaku by Activision, Radical Entertainment's parent, in 2012 when the studio was reportedly shut down. "Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience."
After exploring some options for the studio, "including a potential sale of the business," which didn't yield a good result, Activision believed that a reduction of studio size would be the only choice, leaving some employees to remain in the team supporting other Activision Publishing projects; but the studio as a whole had stopped developing its own games. Its last project on record was an assistance of Bungie's original Destiny, published in 2014.
Perhaps because both the franchise and the studio have stayed silent for so long, the community takes these "leaks" with a grain of salt, although a new Prototype game seems too good to be true for some fans.
