A Nordic Biome Made Using Photogrammetry & Unreal Engine
Check out this breathtaking forest scene made by Robert Berg.
Environment Artist at Embark Studios Robert Berg has released a new fantastic forest scene made using photogrammetry. According to the author, this project is a culmination of all his previous works with procedural forests over the past years. The Nordic Conifer Biome has an insane size of 2x2 km and contains heaps of sub-biomes like paths, deep forest groves, swamps, lakes, meadows, streams, and fields.
The final scene is running at around 60-80 FPS on the author's GTX1080, which is, according to Robert, a resounding success, as the goal from the beginning was to approach the scene the same way game developers would, going through all the same brutal optimization steps and making it runnable on the current-gen platforms.
All the photogrammetry assets were scanned and made by the author. Robert commented that earlier parts of the project were scanned using a Nikon D850 with a 24mm lens, but later the author settled for Nikon Z7 Mk2. The scene is completed in Unreal Engine 4.26 and has fully dynamic lighting. Some parts of the environment were also made using Blender and Substance 3D software.
"This has been a real beast of a project that has terrorized my life for a long time," comments the author. "But I am happy with where it ended up. Now I really need to go and do some smaller things for a while."
