A Unity-Powered Post-Processing Effect That Can Fake Dappled Sunlight

Here's a cool shadow effect, written by Game Developer Alex K Dixon.

Game Developer and Unity enthusiast Alex K Dixon has unveiled a cool post-processing effect that can fake the dappled sunlight coming into the forest. The effect looks absolutely marvelous and will definitely be helpful to Environment Artists who utilize Unity as their engine of choice. Luckily, the author briefly explained how the effect works so that anyone could understand the technique and replicate it for their own Unity projects.

"The rays of sun are a Sunbeam Particle Effect layered on top. The effect is like a Cloud Shadow post-processing effect that uses a few layers of textures to draw a darker color over the whole scene once it's all drawn instead of moving in one direction like clouds," comments Alex. "I'm using some sin/cos motion to move the textures around with some gentle noise. The Directional Light is really bright, so the scene would look blown out with light if the post-processing shadow effect was turned off. But it creates a nice contrast with the shadows over most of it."
