A Video for Cancelled Duke Nukem Begins Has Been Revealed

The video shows us what the game could have been had it not been cancelled by Gearbox.

Some of you might still remember the cancelled Duke Nukem Begins title that was being developed by Gearbox Software. For those of you who don't, all the way back in 2009 there was a legal dispute between publisher Take-Two and 3D Realms, which had claimed ownership of the Duke IP over Gearbox Software. Amid the dispute, Duke Nukem Begins was cancelled, breaking the heart of many fans of the series.

Now, 12 years later, a video surfaced that shows us what the game could have been. An artist Gregor Punchatz has released it via his YouTube channel. In 2008, Gregor was working for Janimation in Dallas, TX, and the team was hired by Gearbox to create a vertical slice (an animated version of what the game will look like) for the Duke Nukem Begins. Because Gregor is proud of the project, he decided to release it 13 years after its creation to immortalize it.

"I headed up this project, as the director at Janimation, and did a lot of the character development, including the design and modeling of Duke. We poured everything we had into making the most awesome cinematic Janimation had ever created. But unfortunately, we got word the game was canceled due to the legal issues with Duke Nukem at the time," comments Gregor. "It crushed us, as this was what we thought could help us compete with bigger players in the game trailer market at the time."
